conditional_render=&#8221;%5B%7B%22value_role%22%3A%22administrator%22%7D%5D&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1618032072425{margin-top: 40px !important;padding-right: 40px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"title2_wp_outer\">What is Sleep Apnea?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"clear_div\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"page91_htmltext1\" class=\"htmltext1_wp_outer\">\n<div id=\"expandabledivhtmltext1_exp\" class=\"expandabledivhtmltext1\">\n<p>Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a breathing disorder which the throat muscles relax to the point of collapse, causing a cessation of breathing flow during sleep for a period of 10 seconds at least.<\/p>\n<p>The respiratory pauses can produce among other effects a decrease in oxygen levels and an increase in carbon dioxide levels in the blood which,can lead to other problems such as an increase in cardiac work and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>When you stop breathing involuntarily the respiratory control centre in the brain sends an activation signal to wake you up just enough to get some air and breathe again. Then you fall asleep again and the cycle starts all over again. This can happen more than 50 times in an hour throughout the night even if you are not aware of it.<\/p>\n<p>As you might imagine, not getting oxygen and constantly being triggered to breathe again, hour after hour, night after night, puts the body under a high degree of stress.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep apnea currently affects more than 3 men in 10 and almost 1 woman in 5, so it is more common than you might think<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11px;\"><strong>References:<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 11px;\"><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>Sleep-disordered breathing affects 34% of men and 17% of women aged between 30-70. Sleep 2006;29(9):1203\u20139<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1617968666404-b72f407d-506a&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div id=\"page91_title5\" class=\"title5_wp_outer\">\n<h4 class=\"title\">Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)<\/h4>\n<div class=\"clear_div\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"page91_htmltext4\" class=\"htmltext4_wp_outer\">\n<p>Central sleep apnoea is the least prevalent type of sleep apnea and can be caused by heart failure or due to an injury involving the brain such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>STROKE<\/li>\n<li>Brain tumour<\/li>\n<li>Viral infection in the brain<\/li>\n<li>Chronic respiratory disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients with central sleep apnea have a disorder at the level of the central nervous system, in which the respiratory control centre does not send the nerve stimulus to breathe. Communication between the brain and the body is lost and the automatic action of breathing is interrupted.
