10 Things you need to know about CPAP masks that you haven’t been told

Did you know that there are hundreds of cpap masks on the market?

Did you know that there are models for men, women and children?

There are even hypoallergenic cpap masks?

Among so many options, one can get lost without knowing which type of mask to choose and even make the wrong choice. If you are about to start cpap treatment or are thinking of renewing your cpap mask, we can help you.

There are 10 key issues to consider before choosing or renewing a mask.

1) There are three types of cpap masks: nasal, facial and ocular. We have to choose one or the other depending on the pressures at which our cpap works, our way of breathing, and obviously, the one that is most comfortable for us within each model. Sometimes the doctor can prescribe the type of mask to wear, but the choice must be agreed between the sleep specialist and the user. Sometimes, what is comfortable is not effective and vice versa.

2) Each Resmed cpap mask model has different sizes to fit the patient’s physiognomy as closely as possible. We must choose a model that does not let air escape to the eyes or sides and that allows us to adjust the headgear properly. Always, of course, being comfortable.

3) Some models offer the “for her” range. We explained the differences between the two ranges in another post.

4) All cpap masks adapt to any type of machine and tube. The diameters are universal. The only precaution is, if the device allows it, to change the “mask type” in the selection parameters of the cpap. Otherwise you may alter the pressures at which the machine will work or generate more leaks.

5) cpap masks are manufactured without natural rubber latex to minimise allergic skin reactions. In addition, there are some ranges of masks that offer extra comfort with gel cushions for even greater adaptability and comfort.

6) cpap masks are for personal use and should be kept in good condition so as not to interfere with the smooth running of the treatment. They should be cleaned daily, before or after use, and always with lukewarm water and neutral soap. It is important to keep the pad free of grease and dirt for proper adherence to the face or nose. The rest of the components, such as the frame and headgear, should be cleaned about once a week.

7) Do not confuse air escaping from the safety valve with a leak. All cpap masks have small holes in the front to allow expired air to escape. We insist, these are the safety valves and we must never cover them because we would prevent the correct circulation and renewal of the air that the cpap is supplying us with.

8) The cpap masks must be replaced every year, or year and a half at the most. These periods may vary depending on the maintenance and use made by the patient. It is not advisable to patch masks to extend their useful life.

9) The components of cpap masks are not interchangeable. As a general rule, each size is a different mask. Only some models allow the cushion size to be changed while maintaining the same frame.

10) Masks do not make noise. If we hear any sound other than our own breathing, the mask is probably ill-fitting. In these cases, the airflow provided by the cpap causes the cushion to vibrate and make sounds. If the cpap mask is incorrectly fitted, air will also escape, with a particular sound effect.

Choosing your ideal cpap mask will not be so difficult if you follow these ten tips.
