Tips to make everyday life easier with your CPAP

Be patient! This should be your maxim when using your CPAP treatment. Eventually you will get used to it and you will immediately see the benefits, improving not only your rest, but also your quality of life. If you are a beginner in the use of CPAP we offer some tricks so that you know how to use it correctly.

Don’t see starting to use CPAP as a challenge. You should normalise its use and see how it is an easy, comfortable and practical treatment which also cares about your health, helping you to sleep better and to control your sleep apnoea problems.

As you know, CPAP is a continuous airway pressure device that delivers air at a predetermined pressure through a mask. In fact, it is already the number one treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSAHS).

Its objective is none other than to keep the pressure in the airways constant throughout the respiratory cycle and it does so in a very easy and natural way, acting in a physiological manner, fitting snugly in the nose, preventing the collapse of the upper airways during inspiration and expiration.

Como habituar-se ao CPAP

Maybe in the first days it will take you a bit of getting used to it, but with some tips and tricks your relationship with CPAP will become more cordial and comfortable. Experts recommend using this treatment for at least 5 hours during the night, but if you have just started the treatment and the air flow keeps you awake, start slowly: sleeping for an hour with CPAP and gradually increasing its use each night.

Another trick to getting used to your CPAP on a daily basis is to get the mask fitting right. Of course, this is now a new feature in your new nights sleep. You may feel claustrophobic or stressed at first, but you should know that there are masks with comfortable pillows, which are lighter and less bulky. However, you can ask us any questions or queries without obligation.

Are you a man with a beard? Do you feel like you get stuck in your facial hair? One trick is to moisturise your beard as much as possible to make it less stiff at night with the use of CPAP. This way, you won’t feel like you get stuck in your beard hair as much and CPAP use becomes smoother. However, know that there are masks designed for just that: designed for men with beards.

Another trick you can take into account to familiarise yourself with your CPAP as soon as possible is to use a humidifier in your room. This will prevent the environment as dry as possible, as well as your airways. This way, you will have a healthier, but also more natural temperature and it will be more comfortable for you to follow your CPAP treatment. It is fundamental to understand that it is something new for you and patience is a virtue in any case. Little by little you will get used to it and lose that initial “fear”. However, if you have any doubts, as always and as we have been doing for years, we are here to inform and help you.
